Who is the pilot nicknamed the Angel of Death?

 He is the German pilot Erich Hartmann, the best pilot in history to shoot down 352 planes and the record holder for shooting down planes. The Germans nicknamed him (Bobby) for his childish face, and his Soviet enemies called him the Angel of Death or the blond devil because of the terror that afflicts Russian pilots when he soars into the sky.

He started piloting at the age of 14 at the hands of his mother, the first female pilot in German history. His father and brother were surgeons. His father tried to introduce him to the field of medicine without success. The Hartmann family was one of the well-known noble families.

He refused his request to enter the Second World War due to his young age. When he reached the age of twenty, he began flying with the Air Force in 1942, i.e. in the fourth year of the war, yet he broke the record for pilots who preceded him.

At the beginning of his flights with the squadron, he heard by radio system Soviet planes at a low level to quickly descend and shoot down two planes while he was in training, to be punished for 48 hours, so that his colleague flew his plane on the second day, and the plane malfunctioned, so he fell and died, and the punishment saved his life.

In 1944, after Hartmann was hit by a Soviet plane, part of the crashed plane hit Hartmann, and this caused his plane to be injured, to land it in the Red Army positions. They passed tall sunflower trees that could hide him when he fled, so he fled amid a hail of bullets from the guard.

With the end of the war, on the last day, he had shot down 350 planes. The Soviets wanted to shoot him down, followed by 4 planes, and the result was that he shot down two planes and raised his tally to 352 on the last day of the war. He returned to his base and destroyed all German planes while they were on the ground so that they would not fall into the hands of the Red Army.

He was captured by the Soviets and sentenced to 25 years in prison. He remained in prison for ten years. He refused all attempts by the Soviets to work as a pilot in East Germany, an ally of the Soviets, in exchange for his release.

He was released in 1955 with the intervention of the Chancellor of Germany and served as commander of the German 71st Air Wing of West Germany
